Advanced Mountain Navigation Course

Mountain Navigation Courses

Advanced Mountain Navigation Course Overview

Our Advanced Mountain Navigation Course is aimed at hill walkers who already have some experience navigating away from paths and bridleways. We aim to pitch this course at a similar level to Mountain Leader Award training courses. It is an obvious next step if you have done our Beginners Mountain Navigation Course.

We will look at navigation in complex terrain and in poor visibility. As it’s not always possible to guarantee poor visibility, we can arrange this course leading into a dusk/night navigation exercise, which can help simulate poor visibility. Night Navigation is also part of the Mountain Leader Award syllabus making it a good opportunity to practice if you are working towards an assessment.

What’s covered on an Advanced Mountain Navigation Course?

This is one of the few courses where we actually have our fingers crossed for poor weather, as these are the conditions we want to test ourselves in. However, regardless of the weather, we will have a great day in the mountains and aim to get into some complex terrain away from paths and bridleways.

We will start by consolidating your existing skills, and then aim to concentrate on micro navigation. We will introduce and practice skills such as timing and pacing, taking and using compass bearings, contour interpretation and more advanced navigation strategies which are all essential for navigating in challenging conditions and complex terrain. Night navigation exercises can also be arranged.

How many can participate?

This course works well with a maximum ratio of 1:4 (instructor to participant) and can be booked for one or two days in duration. This low ratio will ensure you receive quality instruction.

How much will it cost?

Our pricing structure is based on a sliding scale with a reduced daily fee for every additional day booked. If you would like to reserve a contingency day around your preferred date/s in order to pick the best weather and conditions for your course or activity we may be able to arrange this for an additional fee. For more details, please see our pricing structure.

How to book?

We offer a range of scheduled activities that are open to the public and that can be booked online via the red ‘Book Now’ button.
