Advanced Scrambling Course

Advanced Scrambling Course Overview

Our Advanced Scrambling Course is geared towards people who are confident on easier (generally non-technical) scrambles and want to start tackling more challenging routes and perhaps even some easy rock climbs. Perhaps you have your sights set on one of the UK’s great ridges, such as Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis or the magnificent Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye and want to arm yourself with some mountaineering skills? If so, this is the course for you.

What’s covered on an Advanced Scrambling Course?

As with all of our courses, we will keep the itinerary flexible. If you want a guided experience we can simply go and do loads of scrambling. However, if you are want to learn some mountaineering skills to help keep yourself and a partner safer when you are out scrambling then we can concentrate on skills such as route finding and navigation, making quick and simple risk assessments, as well as using a rope in a variety of ways to safeguard yourself.

The boundaries between what constitutes a difficult scramble and an easy rock climb are blurred. There are plenty of grade 3 scrambles that are more like easy rock climbs and vice versa. If you are interested in learning how to approach scrambles like this, then it’s actually very practical to learn how to rock climb. Learning how to break a scramble down into ‘pitches’, belay, place protection and judge what constitutes a solid anchor are done in much the same way as they would be done when rock climbing.
