Beginners Rock Climbing Course Overview

Our Beginners Rock Climbing course does exactly what it says on the tin. We have developed this course for climbers who already have some experience climbing indoors or outdoors and want to gain more experience and confidence. We aim to consolidate your existing skills and take you on to the next step. This will be entirely personal depending on your experience and goals. Typically we aim to concentrate on the skills required to become a competent second.

What’s covered on a Beginners Rock Climbing Course?

We start by ensuring all of our participants know how to put on a harness and tie into a rope with an appropriate knot. Then we’ll look at refining belaying technique if required, including belaying a climber on a top or bottom rope using a variety of belay devices. We also look at a range of climbing equipment and go through its uses and limitations. Guidebook and topo interpretation, route finding and what climbing grades are actually trying to tell us are all covered.

Depending on your particular goals and ambitions, we can look at a wide range of skills which typically include refining technique and efficient movement, good rope work skills and placing traditional protection. Building belays or setting up top/bottom ropes on climbs are all important skills that will be really advantageous if you want to take your climbing to the next level.

The format and content of this course will remain flexible, so if there is a particular element that you would like to focus on in more detail then we will spend more time on it. The venues we use will depend on a number of factors including the weather and suitability of the climbs. It can be run at traditional and sport (bolted) climbing venues.
