Esk Gorge Ghyll Scramble

Ghyll Scrambling in Esk Gorge

Activity Overview

Esk Gorge is located in a beautiful and remote valley of Eskdale. The Esk Gorge Ghyll Scramble features bigger jumps and deeper water than typically found in other Lakeland Ghylls. As such, it’s not for the faint-hearted, and not really suitable for young children. Due to its remote position, we run this as a full day activity.

Typically, we will meet you in Eskdale at a time of your choice (see map below). We’ll then kit you up with the equipment we need and set off walking to the gorge which takes approximately 1 hour. Once we arrive, we’ll then get changed into our wetsuits and the safety equipment and get started. The activity itself usually takes 2-3 hours.

Activity Prices:

This activity is priced per person assuming a group of four or more. If your group is less than four, we charge a flat rate. Your booking will be treated as private unless you give us permission to open it up to the public as a scheduled activity. This could lower the overall cost in line with the rates below:

  • 1-3 participants: £230 flat rate
  • 4-6 participants: £60 per person
  • 7-8 participants: £55 per person

How many can participate?

We believe that keeping group numbers low enhances your experience. Therefore, we run this activity with a maximum of 8 people.

How to book?

We offer a range of scheduled activities that are open to the public and that can be booked online via the red ‘Book Now’ button. Anything else (including this experience) can only be booked privately and enquiries can be made via the form on this page or via the contact form at the top of the page. We require a 30% deposit to secure private bookings and full payment prior to your course or activity commencing. If you would like any more information or have a specific question, please get in touch.

*In extremely wet conditions any of the above activities may be cancelled for safety reasons in which case a full refund will be issued or an option to re-book.

What do I need to bring with me?

We will provide all of the safety equipment required, however, you will need to bring some of your own personal items including:

  • Swimwear (to wear underneath a wetsuit)
  • Footwear (this needs to be robust enough to protect your feet and will get wet)
  • Towel and a warm change of clothes
  • Food and a hot drink for after the activity
  • Rucksack to carry safety equipment and personal items (30 ltr+)

*Please note that it is not practical to take any personal items with you during the activity and jewellery should be removed.
