Honister Classic Via Ferrata

The Classic Via Ferrata at Honister

Activity Overview

The Honister Classic Via Ferrata usually takes around 2-2.5 hours. We meet you in the large carpark at Honister Slate Mine (see map below) and then get kitted up with harnesses, helmets, and Via Ferrata lanyards. The start of the Via Ferrata is a short 10-minute walk through a section of the mine tunnels. After this, the side of Fleetwith Pike opens up and the route becomes visible.

The Classic Via Ferrata roughly follows the old miner’s incline. We use our lanyards to clip to the steel cable which runs from the bottom of the mountain to the top. Iron ‘staples’ and sections of ladders have been installed to make progress easier. This route starts with a relatively easy section that gives you a taste of what it’s all about. We then head into ‘Bull Gill’ which is essentially a steep-sided gorge with a superb atmosphere. The spectacular Burma Bridge (wire bridge) can be clearly seen from here crossing the mouth of the gorge. You may be relieved to learn that the classic route doesn’t actually cross this (or wishing you were!). The classic route now follows the old miner’s incline to the top from where we make our descent back down.
