Whitewater Canoeing
Whitewater canoeing takes the versatility and subtlety of the open canoe into a much more dynamic environment. Moving water introduces a new set of challenges — and opportunities — where good technique, anticipation and judgement become every bit as important as the paddle strokes themselves.
From catching your first eddies and learning to break confidently in and out of the flow, through to running more technical rapids and undertaking longer river journeys, whitewater canoeing offers an almost endless progression.
Our private whitewater canoeing days are tailored around your existing experience, the conditions and what you’d like to achieve. Whether you’re taking your first steps onto moving water or looking to refine your technique on more challenging rivers, we’ll build the day around you.
Reading the River
One of the most important skills in whitewater canoeing is learning to understand the water in front of you.
Rather than simply reacting to each rapid as it arrives, experienced paddlers learn to recognise the features that shape moving water — eddies, waves, stoppers, tongues, boils and changes in current — and use them to plan an efficient line through the river.
Good whitewater paddling is often surprisingly subtle. Position, angle, momentum and timing can make the difference between fighting the current and allowing the river to do much of the work for you.
Depending on your experience and objectives, we can work on:
- Developing confident break-ins, break-outs and ferry gliding.
- Refining forward paddling and boat control in moving water.
- Using trim, edge, angle and momentum to influence how the canoe behaves.
- Reading the river and recognising important whitewater features.
- Choosing and maintaining efficient lines through rapids.
- Using eddies, currents and river features strategically.
- Scouting rapids and making appropriate decisions about when and where to paddle.
- Developing strategies for more technical sections of river.
- River safety, communication and appropriate rescue techniques.
- Building the judgement and independence required for longer whitewater journeys.
Developing Your Whitewater Skills
Whitewater canoeing is about considerably more than successfully getting down a rapid. As your experience develops, the emphasis increasingly shifts towards precision, efficiency and making good decisions.
We’ll look at how relatively small adjustments to your position, trim and paddle technique can dramatically change the way the canoe responds. Rather than relying on power, the aim is to develop a relaxed and efficient style that allows you to work with the river.
Where appropriate, we can also incorporate elements of river safety and rescue into the day, helping you develop a broader understanding of how to look after yourself and other paddlers in a whitewater environment.
The venue and difficulty of the water will always be chosen to suit your experience, aspirations and prevailing river conditions.
Whether your goal is to become more confident on moving water, prepare for more adventurous river journeys or simply spend a great day developing your canoeing, we'll shape the day around what will be most useful to you.
