Navigation Courses Overview
Mountain Navigation
Being able to navigate confidently and accurately is one of the most important skills for anyone spending time in the mountains. When visibility deteriorates, the weather changes or darkness falls, good navigation becomes more than simply knowing where you are — it’s fundamental to making safe and informed decisions.
Our navigation courses are designed for a wide range of abilities, from those picking up a map and compass for the first time to experienced hillwalkers and mountaineers looking to refine their skills.
Depending on your experience, we’ll cover everything from understanding maps, contours and compass bearings to accurate navigation across complex terrain, route choice and maintaining awareness of your position while travelling efficiently through the mountains.
For more experienced navigators, we can take things further with poor-visibility and night navigation, where familiar techniques are put to the test when many of the usual visual clues disappear. It’s an excellent way to sharpen accuracy, judgement and confidence for more demanding mountain days.
No previous navigation experience is required for our introductory courses, although a reasonable level of mountain fitness is recommended.
Courses are available over one or two days and can be tailored to your existing experience and objectives.
Beginners Mountain Navigation
