Learn to Lead Courses Overview
For many climbers, learning to lead is an exciting step towards becoming more confident and independent.
Our Learn to Lead Rock Courses are designed to develop the skills, judgement and confidence needed to lead traditional rock climbs safely. Whether you’ve tried leading indoors, seconded outdoors or are ready for your next challenge, we’ll tailor the course to your experience.
What We’ll Cover
We’ll begin by reviewing essential skills such as tying in, belaying, rope management and attaching yourself securely to an anchor. We’ll then cover route choice, placing and assessing protection, building belays, managing ropes, belaying a lead climber and organising a trad rack.
Because leading carries greater risks than seconding, we take a progressive approach. You’ll practise individual skills before bringing them together through simulated leading, using a separate top or bottom rope for additional security. When your skills are established and your instructor is confident you’re ready, you may progress to leading a route for real.
We’ll also develop your wider climbing judgement, including route assessment, problem-solving and knowing when and how to retreat safely.
Progression to independent leading depends on your experience, the conditions and your instructor’s professional judgement. We can’t guarantee that everyone will lead independently during the course, but we’ll provide the coaching, practice and support needed to help you progress safely and at the right pace.
You should already be comfortable tying in, belaying, removing protection and following outdoor routes.
