Winter Mountaineering Courses

Winter Mountaineering Courses Overview

Winter in the mountains brings a whole new set of challenges—and opportunities. Our winter mountaineering courses are designed to help you develop the skills, confidence and judgement to take on bigger days and more challenging objectives safely.

You might be an experienced summer hillwalker taking your first steps into winter mountaineering and looking to become confident using an ice axe and crampons. Or perhaps you already have winter experience and want to refine your skills, tackle steeper or more technical terrain, or simply benefit from experienced instruction and guidance.

Whatever your starting point, we’ll tailor the course around your existing experience, aspirations and the prevailing mountain conditions. Alongside practical skills, we’ll focus on good decision-making, efficient movement and understanding the winter environment—helping you become a more capable and self-reliant winter mountaineer.

Courses run from December through to April and are available over one, two or three days. Winter conditions are never guaranteed, so if conditions are unsuitable for delivering the course safely and effectively, we’ll offer alternative dates where possible.

Do I need any previous experience?

Some previous summer hillwalking experience is essential, but you don’t need to be an experienced winter mountaineer. Our courses are designed for adventurous hillwalkers and scramblers looking to take their skills further, with flexible, tailored instruction shaped around your experience, ambitions and goals.

How many can participate?

Both of our Winter Mountaineering courses work well on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis (instructor to participant), although up to 4 people can participate. Both can be booked from one to three days in duration.

How much will it cost?

Our standard rates are for private one-to-one guiding or instruction. Additional participants can join for £50 per person, per day, subject to suitable ratios for the activity.

For longer adventures, bookings of five or more consecutive guiding days receive a 10% reduction on our standard guiding fees.
