Scottish Sea Stacks Overview
Scotland’s classic sea stacks offer some of the most memorable and atmospheric climbing adventures in the UK. The Old Man of Hoy, Old Man of Stoer and Am Buachaille are each remarkable objectives in their own right; combining all three creates an unforgettable journey through some of Scotland’s wildest coastal landscapes.
The climbing itself is generally moderate, but the adventurous nature of these routes shouldn’t be underestimated. Exposure, remote locations, sea crossings and changeable weather all add to the experience. You should be comfortable seconding multi-pitch traditional climbs at around VS/HVS, with the Old Man of Hoy including a pitch of E1 5b.
Am Buachaille also requires a short sea crossing, traditionally made by swimming, while access to the Old Man of Stoer can involve either a short swim or a roped Tyrolean crossing.
We recommend allowing a minimum of six days between May and September. Scottish weather is famously unpredictable, so completing all three stacks can never be guaranteed. We’ll use our experience and knowledge of the areas to make the most of the conditions, adapting the itinerary and finding worthwhile alternatives when necessary.
Three iconic stacks, three very different adventures, and some of the finest coastal climbing Scotland has to offer.
When can I go on this trip?
We recommend this trip during the summer months, anytime from May through to September, and would suggest a minimum of 6 days to climb all three stacks (or two days if you only want to climb the Old Man of Hoy). The weather and conditions in Scotland at any time of year are notoriously unpredictable and it should be noted that successfully climbing all three sea stacks is not guaranteed, however, we will do our best to make it happen and will suggest alternatives if the weather and/or conditions are not suitable.
