Advanced Rock Climbing Overview
Our Advanced Rock Climbing Course is designed for climbers who already have a solid grounding in outdoor climbing and want to develop the skills, confidence and judgement needed to become more self-sufficient.
Building on the foundations covered in our Beginners Rock Climbing Course we’ll consolidate your existing skills before progressing onto longer, more involved and potentially more challenging climbs. Rather than following a rigid syllabus, the course is tailored around your experience, aspirations and the areas of your climbing you most want to develop.
As the climbing becomes more adventurous, good decision-making and efficient ropework become every bit as important as technical ability. We’ll look more closely at route selection, movement and climbing technique, placing and evaluating protection, building anchors, rope management and making transitions efficiently on multi-pitch climbs.
We can also introduce some of the problem-solving skills that experienced climbers rely upon when things don’t quite go to plan — helping you develop a broader understanding of climbing systems rather than simply learning a sequence of techniques.
What We’ll Cover
Where appropriate, we’ll spend time on:
- Developing confident and efficient lead climbing
- Selecting and placing traditional protection
- Building and assessing anchors
- Efficient multi-pitch ropework and changeovers
- Route finding and interpreting guidebooks
- Improving movement and climbing technique
- Managing longer and more committing routes
- Retreating safely from a climb
- Problem solving and dealing with common climbing scenarios
- Developing sound judgement and decision-making
The exact content and level of climbing will depend on your existing experience. For some climbers, the next step might be becoming confident leading independently; for others, it could mean moving onto longer multi-pitch routes or developing the skills to tackle more adventurous mountain crags.
Ultimately, the aim is not simply to climb harder. It’s to help you become a more capable, efficient and independent climber, with the skills and judgement to take on your own climbing adventures with confidence.
