Scrambling and Mountaineering Courses

Scrambling and Mountaineering Courses Overview

Scrambling is a fantastic way to explore the mountains and a natural progression for adventurous hillwalkers who want to move beyond established paths into steeper, more spectacular terrain.

Mountain scrambles vary considerably in difficulty and character and are typically graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3+, with Grade 3+ being the most challenging. Some guidebooks describe the more difficult Grade 3 and 3+ scrambles as easy rock climbs. Accurately assessing the difficulties likely to be encountered—and tackling them safely—requires a significant range of skills and experience.

Our scrambling and mountaineering courses are tailored to suit your ability, experience and aspirations. We can help you develop the movement skills, route-finding, hazard awareness and decision-making needed to enjoy more challenging terrain with confidence.

Most courses take place in the English Lake District, although courses can also be arranged in North Wales and Scotland. Previous hillwalking experience is desirable, and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Safety equipment can be provided, and courses are available from one to three days in duration.

Introduction to Scrambling

Do I need any previous experience?

Our Introduction to Scrambling course is designed for adventurous hillwalkers ready to move into steeper, more exposed mountain terrain and develop the skills to tackle classic scrambles with confidence.

If you already have scrambling experience and want to progress onto more technical and committing ground, learn how to use a rope to safeguard others, or tackle some of the UK’s classic mountain ridges, our Advanced Scrambling course is the natural next step.

Whichever course you choose, instruction is flexible and tailored around your existing experience, ambitions and the skills you want to develop.
