Introduction to Scrambling Overview
Scrambling opens up some of the most exciting and spectacular terrain in the British mountains. Our Introduction to Scrambling course is designed for experienced hillwalkers who want to progress onto steeper, more exposed routes and develop the confidence and judgement to tackle them safely.
Perhaps you have your sights set on a classic ridge but feel daunted by the exposure, or you’re already comfortable on easier scrambles and want to become more confident looking after yourself and others. Whatever your starting point, we’ll build on your existing mountain experience and help you become more capable and assured on scrambling terrain.
What We’ll Cover
The course is practical and flexible, using a mountain journey to put skills into context wherever possible. We’ll typically cover:
- Route-finding and interpreting scrambling guidebooks
- Assessing weather, conditions and route choice
- Efficient movement on steep and exposed terrain
- Recognising hazards and managing risk
- Choosing when to continue, retreat or change plans
- Safeguarding yourself and others
We can also introduce basic ropework and simple techniques for protecting short sections of more difficult terrain where appropriate.
Course content is tailored to your experience and aspirations, with the aim of giving you the skills, confidence and judgement to enjoy your own scrambling adventures more safely and independently.
