For mountain rock climbing in the Lake District, Scafell is second to none. It’s home to a magnificent collection of routes right across the grade spectrum which are steeped in lore and legend. The style of climbing is often delicate and bold and navigating around the crag for the first time can be difficult. The crag is roughly comprised of four main buttresses split by deep and distinctive gullies. The shortest approach is from Wasdale, although approaches can be made from Eskdale, Borrowdale, and even Langdale.
A day’s guided rock climbing on Scafell Crag usually involves meeting at Wasdale Head and approaching from here. On a fine day in the height of summer, climbing here will linger in the memory for a long time to come. The ‘classic rock’ routes here include Jones’ Route (HS) and Moss Gill Grooves (MVS), which features beautifully delicate climbing in a very impressive setting. Slightly harder but equally classic and highly prised routes include Botterill’s Slab (VS) and Central Buttress (E1). Winter climbing on this crag is also superb and relatively reliable.
Please note that Scafell is a multi-pitch climbing environment so some previous experience is required. If you have a good level of fitness and the skills of a competent second, then please contact us for more information and to organise a day climbing on this great Lakeland cliff.
Guided Rock Climbing works well on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis (instructor to participant) and can be booked from one day to a week in duration.
